A reader from Hoboken,New Jersey , June 6, 1999: Beautifully written and photographed, impeccably researched. As an American who lived in London for 15 months, I thought I knew every museum in and around the city. But Ms. Kaplan's beautifully written guide introduced me to several unkown gems. What makes this guidebook so appealing, and unusual, is that in addition to decribing the museum's contents she tells you the story of how the museum came to be. Ms. Kaplan's fascinating anecdotes put the museums and their collections in the appropriate historical and political context making for a more meaningful visit.

London Restaurants: the Rough Guide
Charles Campion / Paperback - 496 pages (February 1999) Rough Guides; ISBN: 1858284708
Restaurants london, guide

Glenfiddich "Restaurant Writer of the Year" Charles Campion has eaten his way around London to compile the first Rough Guide to 320 restaurants and pubs around the city. They are arranged by area. There are a total of 47 areas and only the best restaurants and pubs are included. There's no bias in regard to style as Italian, Thai, Chinese and French restaurants are rated equally highly. A map is included at the start of each section showing exactly where the restaurants are situated. Each restaurant has a price guide which shows the minimum amount per person you are likely to spend "assuming you are not a non-tipping, non-drinking skinflint". Each review shows the prices of various dishes and gives the restaurant's opening hours, address, telephone number, and the credit cards accepted.  One of the best things about the book however, is that it's tiny and fit's easily into the smallest briefcase or glove compartment. This will ensure that you always have it with you when find yourself in Southall and suddenly feel hungry. --Dale Kneen
